2月11日（米国時間）に48歳で急逝した歌手ホイットニー・ヒューストンのファンたちは、『iTunes』で彼女のアルバムを購入しようとしてショックを受けた。価格が一晩で急騰していたからだ。

ホイットニーのアルバム『2007 Ultimate Collection』の英国価格は、死が伝えられた直後である12日、4.99ポンドから7.99ポンドになっていた。

この価格急騰を伝えた初期の報道は、米Apple社が価格を上げたとしていた。しかし実際には、ソニーが12日朝に卸値を上げ、小売り価格も上がったことが分かった。価格は12日夜遅くには元に戻った。

なお、同じSony Musicレーベルに属しているマイケル・ジャクソンが2009年に急逝した時、彼の曲はiTunesでのランキングで上位の多くを占めたが、価格は変わらなかった。2011年7月にエイミー・ワインハウスが[27歳で]急逝したときも、曲の売り上げは急増したが、価格は変わらなかった。こうしたことを思いだすと、ソニーの今回の動きは見苦しさが募る。
